Sony's PSP games are stored on UMD discs. Basically, these are miniature DVDs that can hold about 1.8 GB of information. In addition to PSP games, UMD movies are also stored on these discs. Usually, a DVD needs at least 4 GB of space to hold a movie, but since a PSP's screen is smaller than a television, the file size can be reduced, allowing an entire film to be stored on a single UMD disc.
Like other PlayStation consoles, the input buttons and directional pad of the PSP uses Sony's standard button configuration. A four-button directional pad is integrated into the PSP, along with the triangle, circle, square, and X buttons that PlayStation gamers are familiar with seeing on DualShock controllers. Two shoulder buttons are located on the top of the handheld and the select and start buttons are placed on the underside.
Many of the PlayStation's most popular titles have been ported over to the PSP handheld. Grand Theft Auto and Gran Turismo are two examples of the critically acclaimed and commercially successful franchises that are available on the Sony PSP. Many of EA Sports' baseball, football, hockey, and golf video games also have PSP versions, allowing PSP owners to play many of their favorite PlayStation 2 games in a portable form.
Even though Sony PSP game discs are smaller in size than PlayStation 2 titles, their prices are not. Most PSP games are around the same prices as their PS2 counterparts. There are ways to offset the cost of purchasing PSP games though. Interested gamers can purchase pre-owned PSP games at much lower prices than what one would typically expect to pay for brand-new PSP video games.
